Compressed Gas Safety: For the Trades Training Course
Compressed gases are used every day across the skilled trades, from welding and HVAC work to plumbing, automotive repair, and maintenance operations. While these gases are essential for many tasks, they also present significant safety risks when handled improperly. High-pressure cylinders, flammable gases, oxygen-deficient atmospheres, and cryogenic liquids can all lead to serious injuries or property damage if proper precautions are not followed.
This training course provides workers with a practical understanding of compressed gas safety, helping them recognize hazards, follow safe handling procedures, and protect themselves and others while working with compressed gas cylinders and cryogenic materials.
Training Objectives
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to:
-
Identify the three primary categories of compressed gases and their characteristics
-
Recognize common hazards associated with compressed gas cylinders
-
Practice safe procedures for storing, transporting, and using compressed gases
-
Understand the risks associated with liquefied gases and cryogenic materials
-
Recognize asphyxiation hazards in confined or poorly ventilated areas
-
Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for compressed gas tasks
Course Overview
Compressed gas cylinders contain large amounts of stored energy and require careful handling at all times. Whether the cylinder contains oxygen, acetylene, nitrogen, argon, propane, or another gas, workers must understand the unique hazards associated with each type.
This course introduces the three primary categories of compressed gases: liquefied gases, non-liquefied gases, and dissolved gases. Participants will learn why cylinder labels, markings, and safety data are critical for identifying contents and understanding associated hazards.
The training explores both the physical and chemical dangers of compressed gases. Workers will learn how unsecured cylinders can become dangerous projectiles if damaged and how flammable, oxidizing, or inert gases can create serious workplace hazards.
Special emphasis is placed on proper cylinder storage, transportation, inspection, and use. Learners will review best practices for securing cylinders, protecting valve assemblies, separating incompatible gases, and maintaining safe work environments around compressed gas equipment.
The course also addresses the unique hazards associated with liquefied and cryogenic gases. These substances can cause severe cold burns, frostbite injuries, and oxygen displacement that may lead to asphyxiation. Participants will gain a better understanding of how proper ventilation, hazard awareness, and personal protective equipment help reduce these risks.
Designed specifically for workers in the skilled trades, this training provides practical safety guidance that can be applied immediately on the jobsite, in the shop, or at customer locations.
