This course provides general industry workers with the knowledge needed to recognize, prevent, and respond to bloodborne pathogen exposure in the workplace.

Training Objectives

  • Identify bloodborne pathogens and their modes of transmission
  • Distinguish between engineering controls and work practice controls
  • Outline the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Explain employer responsibilities under OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard
  • Describe the steps to take in the event of an exposure incident

Course Overview

Exposure to bloodborne pathogens is not limited to healthcare settings. Workers across a wide range of industries—including manufacturing, construction, retail, and facility services—may encounter blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) as part of their job duties. Without proper training, these situations can present serious health risks.

This course provides a practical, real-world understanding of how bloodborne pathogen exposure occurs and how to prevent it. Learners will explore the most common pathogens of concern, including Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), along with the ways these pathogens are transmitted in workplace environments.

The training emphasizes a layered approach to protection, including engineering controls, safe work practices, and proper use of personal protective equipment. Participants will also gain a clear understanding of OSHA requirements, including the importance of exposure control plans, training, and vaccination programs where applicable.

In addition, the course prepares learners to respond effectively to exposure incidents. This includes recognizing exposure risks, taking immediate action, and following proper reporting and post-exposure procedures.

Designed for general industry workers who may encounter blood or OPIM, this training helps reduce risk, improve compliance, and promote a safer workplace for everyone.
