Telehandler Safety: Safe Work Practices Training Course
Telehandlers, also known as variable-reach forklifts, require specialized operating knowledge because their extending booms, changing load centers, and variable terrain conditions create unique stability challenges. Improper operation can lead to equipment tip-overs, dropped loads, electrical contact, and serious workplace injuries.
This 13-minute training course covers essential telehandler safety practices for construction, industrial, agricultural, and material-handling environments. Participants learn how to evaluate load charts, conduct pre-operation inspections, maintain equipment stability, and operate specialized controls safely.
The course also addresses OSHA requirements for powered industrial trucks and construction material-handling equipment, along with electrical line clearance precautions. It is designed to help operators recognize hazards, make informed operating decisions, and reduce risks when using Class 7 telehandlers.
Training Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between standard warehouse forklifts and variable-reach telehandler operating dynamics.
- Perform comprehensive pre-operation inspections to identify mechanical defects and equipment hazards.
- Apply the L.I.F.T. methodology to maintain equipment stability and safe load handling.
- Operate frame-leveling controls to help maintain proper side-to-side chassis balance.
- Interpret load charts and understand how boom extension and load positioning affect lifting capacity.
- Maintain appropriate clearance from overhead power lines based on line voltage and applicable safety requirements.
Course Overview
Telehandlers operate under different stability conditions than conventional warehouse forklifts. Their telescopic booms can extend forward and upward, shifting the machine's center of gravity and changing its lifting capacity. Uneven terrain, improper load positioning, and excessive boom extension can increase the risk of equipment instability and tip-overs.
This course introduces the operating principles behind telehandler stability, including the stability pyramid and the relationship between boom position, load weight, reach, and machine balance. Participants learn why load charts must be reviewed before lifting and how to recognize conditions that can compromise safe operation.
The training covers essential pre-shift inspections, safe operating practices, the L.I.F.T. methodology, frame-leveling systems, and the use of appropriate lifting attachments. It also addresses overhead electrical hazards and the importance of maintaining safe distances from energized power lines.
The course references OSHA regulations for powered industrial trucks and construction material-handling equipment, including 29 CFR 1910.178 and 29 CFR 1926.602. It also introduces electrical clearance precautions, including the 10-foot minimum distance commonly applied to power lines up to 50 kilovolts under applicable OSHA construction requirements. Actual clearance requirements depend on the work activity, equipment, voltage, and applicable regulations.
This training is designed for telehandler operators, construction crews, warehouse personnel, logistics supervisors, material handlers, and workplace safety professionals responsible for safe equipment operation.
