Course Overview
Identity theft can affect customers, employees, and organizations, making frontline employees an important part of an effective identity theft prevention program. Employees who open accounts, create customer or patient records, process payments, or provide account services may encounter warning signs that require further investigation.
The FTC Red Flags Rule requires certain creditors and financial institutions to maintain an Identity Theft Prevention Program designed to detect, prevent, and mitigate identity theft involving covered accounts. This training helps employees understand their role in carrying out their organization's established procedures.
Participants learn how to recognize different types of Red Flags that may indicate identity theft. These can include alerts associated with consumer reports, suspicious identification or other documents, unusual or inconsistent personally identifiable information, and suspicious activity involving an existing account.
The course addresses examples such as Active Duty Alerts, credit freezes, suspicious identification documents, unusual addresses or telephone numbers, and Social Security numbers associated with deceased individuals. Employees also learn to recognize unusual activity that could indicate account takeover, such as unexpected transactions or changes involving an otherwise inactive account.
Recognizing a Red Flag is only the first step. Employees must also understand what to do next. The training introduces a Detect, Respond, and Mitigate approach, emphasizing the importance of verifying concerns, following organizational procedures, stopping or escalating transactions when appropriate, and notifying a manager or compliance officer when required.
The course also highlights the importance of protecting PII in the workplace. Employees should take care when handling customer information and avoid practices that could unnecessarily expose sensitive data.
This training is designed to give frontline employees a practical understanding of their responsibilities within an organization's Identity Theft Prevention Program. It helps employees recognize potential warning signs and respond consistently rather than attempting to resolve suspicious situations on their own.
This program is available with Spanish and French closed captions.

Why Red Flags Rule Training Matters
Employees are often in a position to notice unusual activity before an identity theft incident becomes more serious. A suspicious document, inconsistent personal information, unexpected account activity, or other warning sign can provide an opportunity for an organization to investigate and take appropriate action.
Effective employee training helps ensure that staff understand what to look for and, just as importantly, what to do when they see it. This course provides a concise foundation for recognizing identity theft warning signs, protecting sensitive information, and following the organization's established response procedures.
