Course Overview

Federal contractors may have significant responsibilities when they access, collect, use, store, or otherwise handle personally identifiable information (PII) on behalf of a government agency. FAR 52.224-3 requires applicable contractor employees to complete initial privacy training and annual privacy training thereafter when they handle PII, have access to a system of records, or perform certain work involving systems of records.

This training introduces the fundamental privacy concepts federal contractors need to understand, including PII and systems of records. Participants learn how information can identify or be linked to an individual and why recognizing sensitive information is an important first step in protecting it.

The course focuses on practical safeguards for handling PII in everyday work. Topics include appropriate access and use of sensitive information, protecting physical and electronic records, following authorized-use requirements, and avoiding unauthorized equipment or technology when accessing or processing PII. These areas are specifically addressed among the minimum training elements identified in FAR 52.224-3.

Participants also learn about unauthorized access and disclosure, including the importance of recognizing potential privacy incidents and following established reporting procedures. The FAR requires applicable privacy training to address procedures for suspected or confirmed breaches and unauthorized disclosure, access, handling, or use of PII.

The training also explains contractor responsibilities for documenting completion. Applicable contractors must maintain and, upon request, provide documentation showing that required privacy training has been completed.
