Course Overview

Electrical hazards present serious risks in any workplace—but in HAZMAT environments, those risks are significantly amplified. Flammable gases, combustible dust, and ignitable fibers can turn a minor electrical issue into a major incident. This course provides essential knowledge to help workers recognize, prevent, and respond to electrical hazards in HAZWOPER-regulated environments.

Participants will learn how electricity behaves in hazardous locations and how different types of environments increase the likelihood of fires, explosions, and serious injuries. The course explains the National Electrical Code (NEC) classifications for hazardous locations, including Class I, II, and III environments, and what those classifications mean for safe electrical practices.

The training also focuses on hazard prevention. Learners will explore key safety measures such as proper grounding, equipment enclosure, hazard labeling, and maintaining safe distances from energized components. Emphasis is placed on the importance of electrical safety planning, including establishing procedures and assigning responsibility for monitoring and maintaining equipment.

In addition, the course covers the role of personal protective equipment (PPE) in reducing risk. Participants will understand how to select and use appropriate PPE such as insulated gloves, eye protection, and arc-rated clothing when working in hazardous environments.
