Hazardous Materials and Spill Response – Canada Training Course
Hazardous materials present workplace risks that require proper identification, safe handling, and appropriate response procedures to protect workers and the environment. This Hazardous Materials and Spill Response – Canada Training Course provides a practical introduction to hazardous material safety in Canadian workplaces, helping employees recognize chemical hazards, understand WHMIS requirements, and follow procedures for preventing and responding to accidental spills.
Participants will learn how to interpret WHMIS labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), identify physical and health hazards, apply safe handling and storage practices, and understand the appropriate response to hazardous material releases. The course also explains the difference between incidental spills and emergency situations and reinforces the importance of recognizing when evacuation and additional assistance are necessary.
Designed for employees, supervisors, maintenance personnel, facility workers, safety professionals, and anyone who may handle or work around hazardous materials, this training provides a foundation in hazardous material awareness, spill prevention, and workplace safety practices in Canada.
Training Objectives
- Recognize the physical and health hazards associated with hazardous materials
- Understand WHMIS labels, pictograms, and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)
- Apply safe handling and storage procedures for hazardous materials
- Identify practices that help prevent accidental spills and chemical exposure
- Differentiate between incidental spills and emergency spill situations
- Understand basic spill response procedures and when to seek additional assistance
Course Overview
Hazardous materials are used in many Canadian workplaces, including industrial facilities, warehouses, maintenance departments, construction sites, and commercial environments. Common products such as cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, paints, solvents, fuels, adhesives, and compressed gases can present physical and health hazards when they are handled, stored, or used improperly.
This training provides an overview of hazardous material safety and explains how workers can reduce exposure risks through hazard recognition, proper handling, and established workplace procedures.
Participants will learn about the two primary categories of hazardous material risks: physical hazards and health hazards. Topics include flammable substances, oxidizers, compressed gases, reactive chemicals, chemical burns, and exposure through inhalation, skin contact, eye contact, and ingestion.
The course also examines Canada's Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), including the purpose of workplace labels, hazard pictograms, and Safety Data Sheets. Participants will learn how to locate important information in an SDS, including product hazards, personal protective equipment (PPE), safe handling procedures, first aid measures, fire-fighting information, and spill response guidance.
Safe handling and storage practices are another important component of the training. Learners will review the importance of using approved containers, keeping materials properly secured, separating incompatible substances, maintaining appropriate ventilation, wearing required PPE, and reporting damaged containers or leaks.
The program also introduces spill prevention and response procedures. Participants will learn about common spill response supplies, including absorbent materials, neutralizing agents, drain covers, disposal containers, and protective equipment. The course explains the difference between incidental spills that may be managed by trained and authorized workers and emergency spills that require evacuation or additional response resources.
By understanding hazardous material risks, WHMIS information, and appropriate spill response procedures, employees can make safer decisions and help support a more prepared workplace.
