Fall Prevention - Canada Training Course
Falls are a leading cause of serious workplace injuries and fatalities across Canadian industries. Working at heights, near unprotected edges, or around floor openings creates significant risks that require proper hazard assessments, fall protection systems, and effective emergency procedures.
This 14-minute Fall Prevention - Canada Training Course introduces Canadian occupational health and safety requirements and practical strategies for preventing workplace falls. Participants learn how to identify fall hazards, apply the Hierarchy of Controls, inspect CSA Z259-certified equipment, and calculate the clearance needed for personal fall arrest systems.
The course also covers travel restraint, fall arrest, and site-specific rescue planning to help workers and supervisors understand their responsibilities when performing tasks at heights.
Training Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify fall protection trigger heights and understand jurisdiction-specific Canadian OHS requirements.
- Apply the Hierarchy of Controls to eliminate or reduce fall hazards.
- Inspect and verify fall protection equipment in accordance with applicable CSA Z259 standards.
- Calculate total fall clearance requirements before using a personal fall arrest system.
- Differentiate between travel restraint and fall arrest systems.
- Understand the importance of implementing site-specific fall protection and rescue plans.
Course Overview
Falls from heights can result in severe injuries or fatalities, even when workers believe they will only be exposed to a hazard for a short period. Construction sites, industrial facilities, oil and gas operations, utility work, and maintenance environments all present potential fall hazards. Recognizing these risks and establishing appropriate protective measures before work begins are essential parts of workplace safety.
This course introduces Canadian fall protection requirements and explains why trigger heights can vary by jurisdiction. Participants learn about differences between federal and provincial or territorial occupational health and safety rules, including examples such as the 2.4-metre threshold under federal requirements and Alberta's 1.2-metre requirement in specified permanent work areas. The training also emphasizes that protection may be necessary at lower heights when other hazards, such as machinery or open vats, are present.
The course examines the Hierarchy of Controls as a foundation for fall prevention. Participants explore ways to eliminate exposure by performing work from ground level and using passive protection systems such as guardrails, secured floor-hole covers, and warning-line systems where appropriate. The importance of conducting and documenting fall hazard assessments before work begins is also covered.
When passive protection is not practical, the training introduces active fall protection systems. Participants learn the differences between travel restraint systems, which prevent workers from reaching a fall hazard, and fall arrest systems, which stop a fall after it occurs. The course also addresses the importance of inspecting harnesses, lanyards, connectors, and other equipment for appropriate CSA Z259 certification and condition.
Another key topic is fall clearance calculation. Participants learn to consider lanyard length, deceleration distance, harness stretch, worker height, and an additional safety factor when determining whether sufficient clearance exists below a work area.
Finally, the course covers site-specific rescue planning and the importance of prompt response following a fall. Workers and supervisors learn why rescue procedures, appropriate equipment, and trained personnel are essential for addressing suspension hazards and supporting an effective emergency response.
This training is designed for construction workers, oil and gas personnel, utility technicians, maintenance crews, supervisors, and safety professionals working in Canadian environments where fall hazards may be present.
