Course Overview
Earthquakes can occur with little or no warning, making workplace preparation an important part of emergency safety. The greatest risks to workers often come from falling objects, damaged structures, unsecured materials, fires, utility failures, and hazardous material releases rather than from ground movement itself. OSHA recommends hazard identification, planning, mitigation, and worker training to help reduce these risks.
This training focuses on practical steps employees can take before, during, and after an earthquake. Participants learn how to identify workplace hazards, secure furniture and stored materials, address potential overhead hazards, and understand the importance of emergency preparedness and planning.
When shaking begins, employees need to know how to respond quickly. The course teaches the Drop, Cover, and Hold On procedure and reinforces the importance of staying in a safe location until the shaking stops. OSHA and the CDC recommend this approach as a primary protective action during an earthquake.
The course also covers workplace emergency plans, evacuation routes, assembly areas, and emergency supplies. Employees learn what to look for after an earthquake, including aftershocks, fires, gas leaks, damaged electrical systems, falling debris, and other hazards that may remain after the initial shaking. OSHA notes that aftershocks can cause additional damage to already weakened structures.
