CUI Awareness for Engineering, Quality, and Supply Chain Personnel Training Course
Engineering, quality, and supply chain personnel often handle sensitive technical drawings, inspection records, specifications, and other information connected to government and defense contracts. When this information requires safeguarding or dissemination controls under applicable laws, regulations, or government-wide policies, it may be designated as Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).
This course explains how to recognize CUI, apply authorized markings, manage access and distribution requirements, and protect sensitive information during daily operations. Participants learn appropriate handling practices and understand the importance of promptly reporting suspected exposure or mishandling.
Designed for personnel who work with government-related technical information, this training supports awareness of CUI safeguarding responsibilities across engineering, quality, and supply chain operations.
Training Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and distinguish it from other information.
- Apply proper CUI markings and designation standards.
- Manage access permissions, dissemination controls, and distribution requirements.
- Safeguard CUI during storage, communication, and daily handling.
- Identify potential CUI exposure or mishandling incidents and understand applicable reporting deadlines.
Course Overview
In high-velocity engineering, quality, and supply chain operations, personnel routinely handle sensitive drawings, inspection records, and technical packages. When unclassified information requires safeguarding or dissemination controls pursuant to law, regulation, or government-wide policy, it is categorized as Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). CUI is not classified information, but failure to protect it can jeopardize defense projects, compromise intellectual property, and violate federal contract requirements.
Proper handling begins with consulting official registries, including the government-wide ISOO CUI Registry and the DoD CUI Registry, and applying authorized markings. For defense documents, required markings generally include a CUI banner at the top and bottom of every page, along with a CUI Designation Indicator Block on the first page or cover. When emailing CUI, personnel must use organization-approved accounts and marking notices. Attached CUI files must retain their own designation block.
Sharing CUI requires verifying that recipients have a lawful government purpose and ensuring that applicable Limited Dissemination Controls (LDCs), such as FED ONLY, NOFORN, or REL TO, and DoD distribution statements are followed. The absence of an LDC does not mean a document is approved for public release.
In daily operations, CUI must never be stored in personal cloud drives, sent through personal email accounts, or left unattended on shared printers. If CUI is mishandled or exposed to an unapproved environment, employees must preserve evidence without creating unnecessary additional copies and report the event through internal security channels. For contractors subject to DFARS 252.204-7012, cyber incidents involving covered defense information require formal reporting within 72 hours.
