Artificial intelligence is transforming how people search for information, write content, make decisions, and interact with technology. From hiring software and healthcare systems to search engines and AI chatbots, these tools are becoming part of everyday life.
But as AI becomes more influential, an important question continues to emerge:
Can artificial intelligence be fair to everyone?
Researchers, technology companies, governments, and nonprofit organizations have increasingly raised concerns that AI systems can reflect or amplify existing societal biases. These biases can affect hiring recommendations, facial recognition accuracy, healthcare decisions, lending, online moderation, and the information people receive from AI-powered assistants.
To help address these challenges, nonprofit organization Onyx Impact has introduced Aisha, an AI assistant designed to better center Black history, Black voices, and trusted community knowledge while providing users with more culturally informed responses.
Why AI Bias Is a Growing Concern
Artificial intelligence learns from enormous collections of existing data. If that data contains historical inequalities, stereotypes, or gaps in representation, AI systems may reproduce those patterns.
Bias can enter AI systems through:
- Historical datasets that reflect past discrimination or unequal treatment
- Underrepresentation of certain communities in training data
- Human decisions about data selection, labeling, and model evaluation
- Safety rules and moderation policies that may affect responses differently across topics
- Reinforcement learning and feedback processes used to refine AI behavior
- Differences in how AI systems are tested across demographic groups
Because AI is increasingly used to support important decisions, even small biases can have significant real-world consequences.
Examples of AI Bias Affecting Black Communities
Researchers have documented several areas where AI systems have produced unequal outcomes for Black individuals and other underrepresented groups.
Facial Recognition Errors
Multiple independent studies have found that some facial recognition systems historically produced higher error rates when identifying people with darker skin tones, particularly Black women. These inaccuracies have raised concerns about the use of facial recognition in law enforcement and public safety.
Hiring Algorithms
Organizations have experimented with AI-powered hiring tools to screen job applicants. When trained on historical hiring data, some systems have unintentionally favored characteristics associated with previously hired candidates, potentially disadvantaging qualified applicants from underrepresented backgrounds.
Healthcare Algorithms
Researchers have found that certain healthcare algorithms underestimated the medical needs of Black patients because they relied on healthcare spending as a proxy for illness. Since healthcare expenditures do not always reflect actual health needs, this approach produced unequal recommendations.
AI Image Generation
Several AI image generators have been criticized for producing stereotypical or inaccurate images based on race, occupation, or culture. These outputs highlight how biases in training data can influence generative AI systems.
AI Search and Chatbots
Large language models sometimes provide incomplete historical context or overlook perspectives from marginalized communities. If trusted sources representing those communities are underrepresented in training data, important voices may be missing from AI-generated responses.
Introducing Aisha by Onyx Impact
To help address these challenges, Onyx Impact developed Aisha, an AI assistant designed to provide information that better reflects Black history, culture, scholarship, and trusted community perspectives.
Unlike general-purpose AI assistants, Aisha emphasizes sources and knowledge that are often overlooked or underrepresented in mainstream AI systems.
According to Onyx Impact, the goal is to create a better experience for users seeking reliable information about Black communities while helping combat misinformation and digital manipulation.
About Onyx Impact
Onyx Impact is a nonprofit research, media, and technology organization dedicated to amplifying Black voices and protecting Black communities in the digital age.
The organization focuses on:
- Combating digital misinformation
- Supporting healthier online communities
- Promoting responsible technology
- Conducting data-driven research
- Developing tools that improve digital resilience
Founder and CEO Esosa Osa has extensive experience leading initiatives focused on protecting democracy, combating information influence campaigns, and empowering marginalized communities. Before founding Onyx Impact, she served as Deputy Executive Director of Fair Fight Action, where she led national efforts involving voting policy reform, research, communications, and organizing.
Why Specialized AI Tools Matter
General-purpose AI systems are designed to answer questions across nearly every topic imaginable. While incredibly capable, they may not always provide complete historical context or include perspectives from communities that have been underrepresented online.
Specialized AI assistants like Aisha aim to complement broader AI tools by focusing on:
- More representative information sources
- Greater cultural context
- Community-centered perspectives
- Reduced misinformation
- Improved digital literacy
Rather than replacing general AI assistants, these tools demonstrate how AI can be developed to better serve specific communities and educational needs.
The Future of Fair AI
AI fairness has become a major focus for researchers, governments, universities, and technology companies. Organizations are investing in methods to identify bias, improve training datasets, increase transparency, and develop more responsible AI systems.
While no AI model is completely free from bias, tools like Aisha represent an important step toward creating AI systems that are more inclusive and better reflect the diversity of human experiences.
As artificial intelligence continues to shape education, healthcare, business, and public life, ensuring that these technologies serve all communities fairly will remain one of the industry's most important challenges.
